Issuing a communique condemning the vicious attack on the state student march on 17/05/17, urging the government to stop taking evasive maneuvers and take the required steps to settle an issue that is getting seriously out of hand.
For over a year and a half, medical students have engaged in a peaceful demonstration (Sathyagrahaya) demanding that the SAITM issue to be heard by the government and be given a proper solution. However due to the deaf ears of the authorities, their attempt was neglected and they had to resort to the streets to settle this issue. Recently the government issued a media statement stating that the issue of SAITM was done and dusted whilst the state students, Government Medical Officers’ Association, Medical Students National Parents Society, Federation of Medical Teachers Association and several other parties of this matter vehemently refused to accept the solution given by the government.
In response to that, the Inter University Federation of Students and Medical Students Action Committee (MSAC) organized a rally yesterday (17/05/17) which commenced from Fort Railway station and was brutally suppressed by Police and STF forces at Ibbangamuwa Junction. When the students proceeded by an alternative route, the police shot tear gas at resting students at Viharamahadevi Park.
The video footage telecasted by all telecasters show clearly that the “45 Degrees” rule was once again forgotten by police where we saw direct firing of tear gas cans. Tear Gas cans were fired over a time lapse of one hour periodically according to news cast. While the state police forces are much eager to attack and apprehend students while violating an immense number of human rights, they seem to be quite hesitant to deliver the same justice to the suspects of a forged alleged attempt of murder, CEO of SAITM and other parties. While over 15 students were crammed into a single jeep and taken into custody while the door was banged on their faces, the alleged suspect of a crime was called most humbly into police and inquired of the crime, who with great pride came out of the police station and uttered into media that “He was treated with great respect” Why the Duplicity of state? Why the double standards? What example does the government set from this? Why would a portion of the Sri Lankan community be penalized in one manner while the rest are treated otherwise? We as the Parents of the state university students criticize this disgusting double standard bearing immense pain of the manner they treated our children.
We would like to ask all the self-proclaimed experts and “Professors” on this issue who have toiled day and night whitewashing the government. We ask you where were your “Good Governance” while the government rendered a hellish attack on unarmed students? Why did you fail to see the atrocity and violation of human rights that you claim to stand for? What purpose do you serve? Instead of being heroes by holding self-hosted Media Shows, we challenge you to bring in all the parties of this matter and hold a proper debate. We urge the government to remember well, that we as parents have not abandoned our students and to expect the uprising from the grass root level. We will support our students till the end and we believe in their fight.
